Want to cook the fluffiest tender jasmine rice? Here’s a guide on How to Cook Jasmine Rice on the stove top, in an Instant Pot, or a rice cooker.

A plate of jasmine rice.

I’ve been eating jasmine rice since I was able to eat solid foods. I actually stopped eating it for a few months after I moved out of my parent’s place because I was just so tired of eating it every single day with every single meal. Funny because now I pretty much it every day again after my small break haha.

Jasmine rice pretty much goes with everything and we pretty much buy it in bulk. When perfectly cooked, you can make out the individual grains of rice once it’s cooked. When rice isn’t cooked properly (ie too much water, too long, etc) your rice will have a mushy texture to it. This guide shares how to cook two cups of rice.

What is Jasmine Rice

Named after the sweet-smelling jasmine flower, jasmine rice is a long grain rice variety Oryza sativa, native to Thailand Cambodia, Laos, and Vietnam. It has a delicate floral and buttery scent. It may look similar to basmati rice, but it is more aromatic and isn’t as firm in texture. There’s also white, brown, and black jasmine rice varieties but we’ll be working with white jasmine rice in this guide.

What You’ll Need to Cook Rice

  • jasmine rice
  • water — or broth if you want your rice to be flavoured but I usually use cold tap water.

I like to rinse my rinse through a fine mesh strainer and the rice paddle is my choice of rice fluffer.

FAQs

Do I have to rinse my rice?

I highly suggest you rinse your rice before cooking. Rinsing the rice removes any accidental debris that might be in the rice. Rinsing the rice also helps removes the surface starch that can cause the rice to clump together as it cooks.

Do I have to soak my rice?

You don’t have soak jasmine rice. Soaking the rice means you’ll have to use less water so it messes with the rice to water ratio. However, with the rice cooker, you can “soak” it by adding rice and water to the rice cooker and setting a timer for it to automatically cook a few hours later with no issue.

How much rice does 1 uncooked rice make?

Tips

  • Keep in mind that the measuring cup that comes with the rice cooker is not equal to one U.S. cup.
  • One cup raw rice yields ~3 ½ cups cooked rice.
  • You can cook the rice with chicken or bone broth or vegetable broth for more flavour.
  • You can cook the rice with a knob of butter and pinch of salt for added flavour.
  • I don’t measure my water for the rice cooker method. I follow the lines in the liner!
  • Add some oil to the Instant Pot liner if you’re worried about sticking.
